As sound designers, we have a pretty unique hobby! One form of practice that seems super simple but is incredibly powerful is to Stop and Listen. Taking a moment to really stop and tune into the sounds around you isn’t just good practice, it’s like a form of meditation. Nature, city sounds, random creaks all can become a lesson in sound design. Paying attention to different frequencies in your environment sharpens your ear for mixing, EQ, and knowing what makes a sound stand out.
Here are three things to try next time you're out listening:
Compare what you hear with your eyes open vs. closed! It changes more than you'd expect.
Try recording Foley from nature and turn it into something crazy! It forces you to think in layers and textures.
Get creative! Sometimes a totally different object gives a better version of the sound you want than the real thing.
Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun and be creative. When you relax your expectations then listening becomes more fun, and designing feels less like work and more like play.
